Sedes Sapientiae is Latin for "Seat of Wisdom", and is a devotional title for Mary which likens her to the Throne of the famously wise Solomon, and associates her with teaching and learning.

History of the Icon


To celebrate the Jubilee year of universities in 2000, Pope John Paul II commissioned a mosaic depicting Mary as Our Lady, Seat of Wisdom. This icon travels to universities around the world, uniting students and staff in our shared faith and pursuit of knowledge.

Why universities?


The example of Mary, who pondered the life of her son in her heart, can help us to link our university life with our faith.

When handing over the icon, Pope John Paul II said - "Dear Teachers and Students, this is your vocation: make the University an environment where knowledge is cultivated, a place where the individual finds direction for the future, knowledge, inspiration for effective service of society."

In Australia


On Thursday, 12th December 2008, an Australian delegation of university students received the icon at St Peter's Basillica, as part of the traditional Eucharistic celebration for Roman universities in preparation for Christmas. It will now travel around Australia for a year, providing a focal point for the ministry and campus life of thousands of Catholic students across our nation.

When not travelling the country (see the calendar for the Icon's current location), the Icon will be residing in St Benedict's Church, located on the campus of Notre Dame University, cnr of Abercrombie St and Broadway. It's a short walk from Central Station (go out the Railway Square exit, through the tunnel), so feel free to stop by any time!
